Thank you everyone for the support in my decision to step down from major competition of the Havana breed at both the National and State levels. Of course this decision involved a dispersal of all rabbits. My decision to do so was based on personal matters that are happening in my life, but mostly due in large part to the Havana Rabbit Breeders Association. Politics play a large role in any organization as many of you may already know. I hope for the sake of the Havana Rabbit Breeders Association that the corrupt nature of some of the present officers is taken care of as this organization has the potential to prosper into something great.
Several breeders have expressed concern with my decision to discontinue showing. I have contemplated this for quite sometime and have decided to add a few of the former breeds raised at OMM to the barn (for ole' times sake and the mere fun of it). To be quite honest I truly missed the friendly nature of certain clubs and breed organizations.
In short, you might just see me at a show here and there. As you may well know, once "Rabbit Showing" is in One's blood, One will always have rabbits.
Thanks again!
A brief history of the rabbitry:
In 1992 I began showing New Zealand Whites (due in major part to a childhood babysitter) in the beautiful Fox Valley of North Eastern WI. Several years later I switched to Harlequins and shortly after I purchased my first pair of Havanas. There weren't many breeders then, but I did manage to win my first BOB and earn a leg. Soon after doing so the Harlequins were quickly replaced and the Havanas gained my full attention. Back then the body type of the Havana, in Wisconsin, was poor. With help from a fellow breeder, she and I began improving the type with stock from out of state. I have always been interested in genetics and it didn't take long before competitive stock was produced.
Fast forward to a few years later, the rabbitry relocated to North Central Wisconsin. Here Olde Meadowe Menagerie operated as a small to mid-sized rabbitry composed of 30 holes that specialized in Chocolate Havanas. In addition to the Havana, another breed raised was the Japanese Harlequin. O.M.M. had previously raised and shown Harlequins ('96, '97,'01), Netherland Dwarfs, American Sables ('00 - '01), English Lop ('07-'08), and of course Havanas ('97 - '08). Quality was the number one goal. Breeding, raising, and showing quality, registered stock insures success on both the show table and in the nest box. Although the coveted BIS has not yet been achieved, several BOB have been awarded to every breed raised here at O.M.M.
